Yes, I am aware of what I look like. I have a mirror.

For the longest time I was puzzled how there are people who can look at others in the eye and tell them the most obvious comments about their physical appearance. It was like an odd Facebook comment that was said out loud.

At first I thought it was to help, but they were not the doctors. Then I thought maybe they just had nothing to say - but what about the weather or the thousand small talk topics? Or perhaps they just were not aware that the person they're making the comments on actually know what they look like?

Guess I'll never know.

I do have my fair (or maybe too much of it) share of these comments that seemingly come out of nowhere.

Looking how I look like, I've been told many things.

Whatever you can come up with have been told right in front of my face, right in front of my face with a laugh, behind my back or the entire neighborhood.

When I was younger these things did nothing to my confidence. I was told that too fat, too thin, too wide, when I was just going through puberty.

It did not help that I have the most frizzy hair and I hated myself for it instead of realising that I just needed to lay off a bit on the hair washing and actually use appropriate products for my hair type.

I was even told I should shave off my gums to make my teeth look normal.

For the longest time, I believed  this and didn't smile properly. It was only until recently that my husband persistently encouraged me to smile how I like to smile and not care about how other people see or think. And while we're on this boat, my dentist told me that other than the alignment that needs to be fixed SHOULD I WISH TO DO SO, what I have is completely normal and my very visible gums are not something that I need to fix.

Believe it or not, I was bullied for having light skin and I wished I was darker. I just laughed at the memory the moment I grew up and saw how much people are obsessed and are paying just to get lighter skin.

I allowed myself to be picked on based on my choices of clothing by the people who didn't know and dressed any better.

I know I have gained weight but I don't mind because I have been eating so well lately - have you?

This is not a pity party.

I wrote this to tell you that I know what I look like and I love myself for it.

I love the visible gums.

I love the muffin top. But I think I'll work on this one next year not because people tell me I'm fat, but only because I want to...and most importantly because I really want to eat some more.

I am writing this because I want you to know that I know how I look like and I know what things to fix if they do need some fixing.

I have learned to love myself enough not to let anyone bully my self confidence out of me ever again.

I know what I look like.

I have a mirror.

A Sunday and an Impulse Decision: My Digital Perm Experience at Bangs Prime Salon (SM Seaside)

Saturday, June 24, 2023

For the last few months, I have been on and off on wanting to perm my hair. I thought I was totally over the idea because I was scared that it would just frizz the hell out and I won't be able to manage it well. I also have been rehabilitating my hair for four years now - it's finally in a place where I can call it healthy and I did not want to fudge it up.

However, it was one random Sunday when out of nowhere, I just wanted to put my hair through the unpredictable chances of chemical alterations. I thought I'd finally just head to the salon without any  much hesitation, research, etc. I knew if I gave myself space to overthink it again, I wouldn't be able to do it.

It is worth noting that I had this treatment on the 27th of March 2023. I am posting the blog a little later. We all have different hair type, hair tolerance, etc so your experience may differ with mine.

Before anything else though, here's a quick profile of my hair and scalp condition:

  • It has not been dyed or salon treated for the last four years.
  • It has never, ever been rebonded nor has it experienced the brazilian blowout.
  • The last (old school) perm I had was almost a decade ago. Damn, I'm old.
  • My hair gets frizzy when the humidity is high or if I shampoo more often.
  • I have thin, fragile hair. It's not too thick, but not very thin either.
  • My scalp, I just found out in this perm trip that it's highly sensitive. I've always thought it was problematic, but it was only until this time that I realised what its problem really was. It flares up on intense products.

The Process

  1. Since this was an impulse decision, I just walked in to the salon. I was lucky that I came a few minutes after they opened and my preferred stylist (Miss Ruby) did not have any appointments for that hour. Even with that stroke of luck, I would not suggest doing the same. Make sure you make a booking for rebonding, perming, colouring or other treatments. You can book through their website or over the phone.
  2. Miss Ruby checked my hair and asked questions about my hair history as well as the style that I wanted. After she confirms it was good to go, she began to trim my hair into a soft layer.
  3. My hair was technically "virgin" so I was able to choose from any of their three perm options. At that time, these were the promo prices:

Screenshot from Bangs Prime Website, 27 March 2023

I chose the Prime Aqua Rebond for Php 1,999 at that time. I was also made to choose from three treatment options and I chose the Prime Keratin for Php 1,300. Ergo, those two were the cheapest options. Lol.

You may check their latest promotions here (link is not affiliate): https://www.bangsprimesalonbytonyandjackey.com/hair-trends
  4. After shampooing, it was time for the real deal.
  5. For the next parts, I will try my best to describe as much as I know and remember but I will be honest and say that I don't have much idea of what was going on. After the perming medicine was applied and my hair wrapped in small sections, an octopus looking device was attached.

  6. My hair was then steamed through those rods for 20 minutes. Some people might find the steaming pretty warm, but you can always tell them if you're uncomfortable with how warm it is.
  7. Then, my hair was cling wrapped to allow cool down for another 20 minutes.

  8. Miss Ruby checked my hair and oh dear, my hair did not go down without a fight. The initial application only very partially worked so they had to repeat the process.
  9. My hair was drenched again in perm medicine and was steamed for another 20 minutes.

  10. After the second round, it was a great thing that my hair finally caved and curled. I went for another round of shampoo and I was told that my hair also received the keratin treatment during this time.
  11. My hair was not blown dry, only scrunched up with towels and they applied hair essence before steaming it for 10 minutes.

  12. Miss Ruby gave it a bit some final scrunching up and taught me the basics of caring for it.

One hour later...

I decided on a very close up photo because my hair is very black and it's difficult to see the curls from a distance, but this is how it looks like with most parts still a bit damp. It took me a while to get out of the mall (because I got lost, but that does not matter) so you will see there are some dried out pieces as well.

A few hours later...

So I was told not to wet my hair for at least 24 hours, but I've decided to go for 48 hours just to be sure the curl has the best chance of holding up. I took a nap and my curls were still intact - pretty much the same as pictured above. Showering was a bit of a challenge because my hair falls below my shoulder. At first, I tried just stuffing it all in my shower cap but that did not hold. So I decided to very loosely tie it up and clip the sides with salon before covering it with a shower cap. I took the slowest shower ever because I was really too scared to mess it up. I did remove the tie and clips right after taking a shower.

After a good night's sleep...

Some of the curls started to loosen, but only because they were starting to get more frizzy by the hour. I did not tie my hair, put it up in a bun, clip or even wrap it with anything. I also still could still smell the perming medicine.

Day 2 of no washing...

On the second night, I just used salon clips to hold them up inside my shower cap and it surprisingly held up well, though a bit loose.

By this time, my head just felt uncomfortable. It was a good thing that the smell was gone or I was desentisised to it by this time. I am usually able to go up to four days without washing my hair without feeling any bit of discomfort, but it was different this time. I was just thankful that I work from home because I don't know how I could have faced the public with day 2 post perm hair.

The curls got very loose already and they looked flatter.

After the first wash...

Other than the styling wax I got at the salon, I did not purchase any other curl-specific products. I read that the one thing that makes the curls go wild is lack of moisture and I already have moisturising hair products at home so I just stuck with it. I just got a new shampoo because I ran out but that is besides the point.

I washed my hair like how I would regularly, only concentrating on the scalp. Like the usual, my fine hair did get tangle. I applied my first coat of hair treatment (no conditioner) as how I usually do and let that sit for around thirty second. I then took a wide tooth comb to manage all the tangles and scrunching up as I go. After my hair was fully detangled, I applied another layer of treatment by scrunching it up this time. I rinsed that afterwards.

Before I got out of the shower, I squeeze out the excess water by scrunching it up again with my hands and a regular towel. I applied a little bit of hair oil and again, scrunching that one up. I swear I'm not trying to hit SEO, but there really is too many scrunching involved here. Anyway, after half an hour, I applied the hair styling wax to set it.

What I liked about my experience

  • Miss Ruby is a stylist I have always been comfortable with even when we only came to her for haircuts. She's gentle, but meticulous. She did not rush into anything and she made sure that I did get the curls I wanted. She was not judgmental and intimidating. She helped me understood my scalp condition and how to better care for my hair. Miss Ruby and also the nice lady who shampooed my hair in the beginning really made me feel at ease.
  • I got the curls I wanted with surprisingly very little damage. My hair was still soft and bouncy after the perm. The old school perm I tried before ended up making my hair look crusty.

What I did not like very much

  • The smell of the perming medicine is probably one that stands out. This is no one's fault, but I just thought it would be worth emphasising in case you have a very sensitive smell. I am quite tolerant with strong smell, but this really got to me.
  • The waiting time for the process. Due to the extreme stubborness of my hair, the process took three hours. Bring some entertainment if you're going to do this because you might be in the chair for a loooong time.
  • The only time I felt uncomfortable was with one lady who gave me so much shizt about my dandruff that I felt like it was a disease. It was the total opposite of how Miss Ruby initially explained my scalp condition to me. Maybe (and hopefully) I just misunderstood, but that was really weird.

If you're going for a digital perm or even a rebond from the salon, feel free to ask Miss Ruby for the aftercare. She is pure Korean but she is really good in English and Bisaya. Some staff tried to upsell me with other hair products, but I only took Miss Ruby's recommendation which made the most sense to me - a styling wax. I will continue to use it (so far I like it), but I will save the long-term review for another day.

When going to salons like this, feel free to decline the products that they offer if you have preferences or you just don't see yourself paying the premium for salon grade products. It is normal to feel pressured to buy, but it is even more normal to say no

Overall, I really liked my experience. I know I keep singing all praises for Miss Ruby, but she was really awesome and I would recommend her any day.

Now, let's hope I get a good maintenance routine going.

BRB, Gone Glamping at Dome de Valentine in Balamban, Cebu

It has been a while since crickets.

Weird way to start off a blog post, I know. However, the exact thought has not left since our first night at the dome when I went out to the outdoor kitchen to grab some cutlery. It was the first time in a very, very long time that I have heard crickets and they lulled me all the way to sleep. It was then that I realised that living in the city does eff up your mind because very mundane things like that sets a place apart from your everyday life.

We wanted an escape, but we still wanted the comfort of a vacation.

We're not very into camping...as a matter of fact, we're not into it at all so you can just imagine how much the idea of glamping is very appealing to us because it has what nature has to offer that we've been craving for without the nitty gritty of setting up camp or having to cook our own meals. It's relaxing down to its core.

We found Dome de Valentine, a part of the popular Treehouse de Valentine, in Airbnb and we decided to choose this for that experience. It's a huge bonus that we could take our dog with us. Our experience magical, but let me tell you more about it.

Booking our stay

We booked our stay via Airbnb. You may check out the listing here. We communicated with Mikhaela, the property manager who was extremely nice to us. After we made the booking, Mikhaela sent us the details of our booking as well as other details about the property. Also via Airbnb messaging, we booked our ride to the property at this time for Php 3,600 for a one-way trip with a sedan. We figured this was the best option because it is sure that the car rental would not have any problem locating the property. This was paid via Airbnb through a payment link that Mikhaela sent to us. Lastly, we pre-ordered (as required) all of our meals. There is also a deposit of Php 2,000 to be paid in cash but is refundable if there was no damage and you check out in time.

Getting there

As mentioned, we booked a ride through Mikhaela (the host). We provided details such as our names, our address and the times that we wanted to be picked up and dropped off. We also noted that we have our dog with us. We left our place at 1:45pm and we arrived at around 3:30 pm. It only took longer because of the traffic in the city. The ride was very much okay, there's only just a few meters of rough terrain when we were about to arrive and a couple of road construction but nothing too bothersome.

The very few metres of rough terrain.

Dome de Valentine

This is probably one of the very few places that look as pretty in real life as it does in the photos. The dome is large with five beds, a dining area and shower room. There is also a private pool, an outdoor kitchen, outdoor shower and a patio.

The dining area comfortably sits eight and is overlooking the private pool and also partly the woods behind it. There is also black coffee, sugar, creamer and dinner napkins that comes with the stay. There is a hot and cold water dispenser inside the dome.

A day bed could also be used as a main bed if needed - though it's obviously a little smaller. This was the perfect spot for just chilling during the daytime, reading a book, scrolling through Tiktok, etc.

Glifesnaps Dome de Valentine Balamban Cebu Glamping

This area right next to the dining is the only one that had a television on it. You can watch Netflix and Youtube - the internet held pretty well even with the streaming. Silent time is at 10:00 pm to 6:00 am. For the Wifi password, Renae will provide it during check in.

A small, but very pretty seating/living area also overlooks the outdoor area.

This is the toilet and shower room inside the dome. It's not particularly large, just enough space but it is obviously very clean. The best part here? The toilet has not only one...but two bidets! The only "problem" I had was there was no place to put extra toiletries in the shower so we just placed ours on the floor.

For the outdoor area, there is a private pool which may not be a large one but I think could comfortably fit around five people at a time. The pool was very clean and well-maintained. This was my first experience having a private pool and I can definitely tell you that after this experience, if I had all the money in the world, I'd go for private pools all the time. I am a little conscious on how I look in swimwear because I don't have the summer bod that everyone seems to have and I find it awkward having to bump into strangers when swimming. This was the first time that I truly fully enjoyed waddling (homegirl can't swim) around the water.

The outdoor kitchen has a large fridge, an induction stove, washing area, cooking utensils, cutlery, mugs, cups, plates, etc. There is also a dishwashing soap and a brand new sponge in the wash area. In our case, we ordered all our meals so we didn't have to cook. In case you do choose to cook, make sure to clean up after yourselves and also put everything back in its place. Right next to the kitchen is a patio that can be used for hanging out or even dining.

This is the entrance to the outdoor shower. I wasn't able to take photos of the inside because our dog got so fussy and excited of being outdoor. However, it was also very clean and though we didn't use it, it was a great enough space if you want to clean up before heading inside. Also worth noting is that you do have to be barefoot inside the dome and you'd have to leave your shoes outside the front door.

Everything that we ate during our stay

All meals (including drinks and complimentary breakfast) should be pre-ordered at least two days before you check in. We ordered all our meals because we usually cook our food at home so we didn't want to have to do it during our vacation. We also added in the times that we wanted to have our meal when we preordered. Since Airbnb does not allow menus to be sent over via private message in the app, I had to message their Facebook page for the menu before sending our choices to Mikhaela back in Airbnb. The total payable for meals were paid for in cash at the property upon check in.

Overall, the meals served surpassed my expectations for the biggest reason that they did remind me so much of homecooked meals that I had back when I was a child. The meals were so homey and cozy - felt like home away from home.

Pork Belly

The pork belly was delicious, but the fatty part was a tiny little bit tough.

Sisig

The sisig was also so good! The only downside was that it was a little spicy for my tolerance which is not that much to begin with. I wouldn't take this against the dish, just my poor spice tolerance because I did enjoy this and was able to finish it.

Danggit with Garlic Rice and Omelette

For breakfast, we first tried their danggit with garlic rice and omelette - you can specify how you want the eggs cooked when you preorder. The danggit was not salty which was great and the egg was cooked well.

 Mixed Platter

I don't even know where to begin with this one. It's like a potluck of all things good. We chose the platter that has seafood - the seafood that we got with ours were baked scallops which I really loved because it was not overly butterly or cheesy. We also had crispy pata, sweet and sour chicken , beef steak, pancit and rice. They all were extremely delicious (I am seriously running out of adjectives here).

Kropek

Green Mango with Bagoong

We didn't order this so I'm guessing this came with the platter but we also had kropek and sliced green mango with bagoong.

Mango Float

For dessert, we had the mango float. This was still very good, but the mangoes were only the toppings. Still very yum!

Humba

The humba was as what we had expected a Cebuano humba to be. It did remind me of how my grandpa used to make it. The meat was very tender.

Chicken Tinola

This had a very generous serving that we ended up sharing the soup.

Chorizo with Garlic Rice

We specifically requested this not to have eggs with so this does not look as festive as usual. The chorizo was spicy so that's something to know if you have no tolerance to spice.

Bacon with Garlic Rice and Omelette

Bacon with omelette. The bacon was nothing too special but it's not bad at all. Still well-cooked.

Pancit Canton

We decided to have a little snack before we checked out. Here we have pancit which was the same as what we had for the mixed platter. The serving was good to be shared by two people.

Turon with Banana

What better way to end a great stay than some delicious turon. This only had banana as a filling which I liked most about it. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I am not a big fan of langka in my turon. Sorry. Anyway, I ended up wrapping up the rest of this home because I was too full from the pancit.

Exceptional Service

When we arrived, the manager Renae (or Renee - I'm so sorry I forgot how it was spelled) welcomed us right at the parking area. He took us through a quick tour of the dome and he even personally delivered a few of our meals during our stay.

On our second day, one of the staff offered if we wanted the pool cleaned which we gladly accepted. Renae and the rest of the staff were exceptional and in my humble opinion, could rival (and even surpass) the  service we experienced at more expensive hotels. They were very friendly and we felt at home in the property.

The Power Interruption

It rained hard on our first night which I believe was the cause of a coconut tree toppling over an electricity line. The next morning, there was no electricity so the property had to use their backup generator. The manager, Renae, asked us if we could only switch on one aircon for the day. We had no problem with this because we planned to go to the river which was only a few minutes walk away and to go swimming in the pool. During the nighttime, we needed the lights and the wifi and the water in the dispenser was already getting to room temperature so we asked for those to be turned on as well. The power interruption lasted through the entire night but we had no problems getting a good night's sleep because of the backup power.

Check out

Check out was at 11:00 am and took no more than five minutes.

Pet-Friendly Tips

They welcome up to two trained pets per group. If your pet is not house-broken (trained for peeing and pooing at very specific places inside the home and is non-destructive indoor), it would be best to leave your pet behind under the care of someone you trust. Always, always clean up after your pet's mess and bring everything essential for that like poo bags, potty pads, etc. Also make sure NOT to use the utensils for your pets and bring separate ones that your pets can use.

In conclusion...

Glifesnaps Dome de Valentine Balamban Cebu Glamping

We're so happy that our first time glamping was one that we loved and would treasure forever. Staycation may not be for everybody because there's really not much to do except to lay around, take a relaxing swim, eat and relax. This is for those who want to really uproot themselves from the noise of their regular lives. It's for those who don't want to do anything at all.
