Thanks to These Books, My Emotions Are at an Edge and We’re Only Three Months In 2023

We're only in the first quarter this year and my emotions are already quite bruised thanks to these four books. I've only read thirteen books so far which is not very much for normal bookworms but...I have other things you know, I have animals in my virtual farm that needs petting and I do get hooked on it for hours on end.

Anyway, out of the thirteen so far, there are four books that had such strong impact that everytime I remember them, their emotional effect still felt like yesterday.

If you're looking for books that will surely tug your heart or disturb you in subtle but memorable ways, you might want to read on...

The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey

via GIPHY

The Snow Child is set faraway in Alaska where Mabel and Jack moved to start a new life. Their marriage has lost its magic since they lost their child and Mabel wanted to get away from the pressure of their their hometown. She no longer wanted to answer the same questions that break her heart each time. So, when the government offered lower price for lands due to a railroad project, they packed their bags and jumped into the opportunity. One night, they made a little girl out of snow and the next morning, it was destroyed but they also found a little girl lurking. Eventually, the little girl warmed up to them and slowly brought warmth into their otherwise empty home.

The tone of the entire book is consistent with how Alaskan winters must feel like. Each character in this story is well thought out of and will constantly put you up on a debate with yourself on whether you like them or not. You will constantly hope that things will get better, but at the same time you'll also have the feeling that it won't and nothing could prepare you for the weird turn of events.

If you're looking to level up your reading palette or you're just seeking for an emotional ride, this book might be for you. Read it slow, if you must.

The Light Through The Leaves by Glendy Vanderah

via GIPHY

I already made a detailed review on this, but let me just run through it one more time.

The Light Through the Leaves is a story of a mother and a lost child. When Ellis accidentally left her baby daughter in a parking lot one time, it seemed like she left everything with her. Her marriage fell apart, her other children got very distant from her, she became addicted and nothing was right anymore. She left her family to avoid inflicting more damage to her children and went on the road. Meanwhile, a little girl named Raven was being raised in isolation of a "Mother" who was just so unconventional in many disturbing ways. Raven grew up not questioning the kind of life that they had but that all changed when she met and became friends with young boys who wandered around their property. This is a story of how two lives that are worlds apart are brought together by chance and destiny.

The plot of this book is not very common and will be a little disturbing in the beginning only because of how unconventional it is. Just give yourself time to warm up and when the plot thickens, it will hit different. I was personally uneased with the Mother's lifestyle and I kept on thinking that if only Raven knew of the world outside of what she grew up in, she would think differently. I don't mean to sht on any belief, but I'm also only speaking to my limited knowledge of it. Anyway, it took a little bit of patience to really ride this through with Raven. However, I just knew I had to. If the author rushed into changing Raven, it wouldn't feel so real as it did.

This book is a coming of age story that may not be the same as the usual story of that sort, but it is also very beautiful... beautiful in unexpected ways and will really hold on to your heart until the very end.

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

You know how there are books that will make you think, "How the hell have I not read this before?!"

Well, this is one of the books for me. I've known about The Picture of Dorian Gray since college. I know its plot and have wanted to read it for so long but between life and all the other literature I needed to get through in order to pass my course, this just slipped through the cracks.

The Picture of Dorian Gray is about this vain, young man named Dorian who had his portrait painted. When it was finished, he was so much in awe that he cried out and wished if the painting could just age and not him. This reminds me of that one Friends scene with Joey's birthday...

via GIPHY

Moving on...Dorian's wish somehow got granted and he unknowingly sold his soul to the devil. This slowly took over Dorian and though his looks throughout the years did not change, but his soul got so corrupted and the painting getting more hideous each passing day. It was only time before his vanity catches up with him.

I knew that I loved Oscar Wilde's writing when I realised how much I hate a lot of characters in this book. My hate was so strong that I had to pause multiple times and curse at them. It was so surreal how strong of emotions it brought out from me. Even with all that, I think this is a good book if you want to let your inner rage come through. Dorian is a character who deserves all the hate in the world...and Mr. Wilde, you did a great job at that.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

via GIPHY

Now, let's end this list on a lighter note.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is well...about the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo and more. Evelyn is a world famous movie star who rose from rags to riches. This story may be told in terms of who Evelyn's husband was at that moment, but this also shows us how much more there was to her as a woman. This is a story of how the impressionable young girl with a dream rose to fame and did whatever she could to keep her spot at the top.

The way TJR wrote this felt so real that I had to pinch and remind myself that this is not a memoir of a real person. This is a beautiful, light read that I think would be great even for occasional or newbie readers.

How much of a person does luxury truly embody?

In the current times when what used to be luxury brands have become more of fast fashion rather than an exclusive clique not everyone can get on, luxury now has a redefined meaning.

However, for these two women it goes beyond the perception of society - it's a complex operation and a dangerous playing field.

The Story

Ava is your typical good Asian daughter. She has a law degree, a great husband and a loving family. Winnie, on the other hand, is not so fortunate and has taken the direction of luck into her own hands.

After almost a decade of no contact, Ava met Winnie again when her life was in a turmoil. Winnie was no longer the dependent roommate that she had. This time, Ava found herself actually depending on Winnie to calm her wailing child and to regain the self worth that she seemed to have lost.

Winnie presented Ava with an offer that she initially found disgusting, but also could not help but get drawn into. Winnie has this "business operation" where she purchases authentic luxury handbags, sells the authentic ones on Ebay and returns a supercopy to the store. At first, Ava was scared and hesitant but it slowly became more like a second nature.

Ava started gaining control of her life again...but at what cost?

What I Think...

This is one of the books that is entertaining but in a really odd way. It keeps you going but it also feels like you're getting nowhere.

The first or most part of this book is Ava retelling everything about the operation to an unknown detective and another part is the truth from Winnie's perspective. You know how there are three sides to a story? Yours, mine and the truth? This is sort of like that. It's Ava's, Winnie's and the truth. I found that Ava's side was bearable and Winnie's was more of a retelling of whatever Ava has told so it started to become boring/annoying by then. Then there's the truth that I don't think I will ever know. I was lead to believe that Ava's side was the truth, but when I read Winnie's part all my faith for Ava went down the drain and by the end of the book I ended up not believing any of it at all.

I felt like this could have been a great short story because as a novel, it was so unneccessarily long winded.

The only thing that kept me going was my curiosity on whether or not they get caught, who gets punished or how it ends...and even those were less than stellar.

Viral Trends I Won’t Be Hopping On: Q1, 2023

Monday, March 13, 2023

There's a recent trend of de-influencing where people share why they won't be buying trendy items that have recently gone viral online. I am not an influencer nor do I believe I am influencial to the slightest bit, but I do have thoughts on some products that have been non-stop forced into my consciousness against my will especially on Tiktok.

I was a very irresponsible shopper in the past. In fact, I have just recovered myself from debt and there is no way that I'll ever put myself through that again. I have learned to be very responsible with what I buy. Though I also have to say I'm not an angel, I still allow myself occasional splurges but I have really come a long way from being the most impulsive buyer on the face of the earth (IMO).

Disclaimer: I am not here to throw shade to the brand or to anyone who loves them. This is just my personal opinion. You buy what you want, I'll think what I want. The world is our oyster.

For this quarter, here are some viral trends I won't be hopping on anytime soon or ever...

Hot pink blush

@livhudsonmakeup nars thrill blush has me in a chokehold fr 🥹☁️💕 what a dream #fyp #makeup #blush #pinkblush #viral ♬ original sound - kardashianshulu

I am not very good with blush application so I never stray away from the nude and peach shades. Given that, this hot pink blush trend is just way out of my comfort zone. It's not even in my orbit.

I have to admit, it does look very pretty but I am just too scared that it won't work the same way for me or I won't know any eye looks that will go with it. I know I could learn, but I don't have the energy and willpower to do that too. Besides that, I already have two blushes that I love. I'm currently giving myself a two item max per makeup category so there's no room for this either.

Charlotte Tilbury Wands

@taontm Trying more Charlotte tilbury matte blush wand 💗🌸🫶🏼 #makeup #beauty #charlottetilburyblush ♬ original sound - sped up audios

This is something that I honestly got so attracted to when it first went viral. I even got close to purchasing. It's a good thing it is not accessible here in the Philippines because as I gave it time, I just found that there were too many influencers pushing it that I just simply got sick of hearing about it. It's like a good song that loses its charm when played way too many times. I also found that there's not much product in this tubes and it is very expensive. Ergo, it's a hard pass on this one.

Dior Lip Oil

@staceyslice will be wearing this everyday from now on ✨ #diormakeup #diorlipoil #diorlipglowoil #viralmakeup #cosmeticscientist @Dior ♬ Wildest Dreams - ㅤ

I think this is probably one of the prettiest products I have seen recently. I also came very close to purchasing this. It had a few add to cart - remove from cart episodes before I completely decided no. This is a very pretty lip oil that also functions as a gloss. I have extremely dry lips so I thought I would benefit from this.

However, the reality of its price got to me. I think this is around Php 3,000. I just couldn't bring myself to splurge that much for a product that I only like because it's pretty. I ended up purchasing a regular lip tint from Bench Beauty and a gloss from Vice Cosmetics and I have no regrets.

Stanley Cup

@mimimarkop Still love them both 😗 #stanley #stanleycup #simplemoderncup ♬ sure thing - luana

I wholeheartedly think that these cups are not aesthetically pleasing nor are they practical. Of course, they are functional (I think)...they're cups, what else is more to expect from them?

I personally would not feel comfortable bringing this outside the house if I had one. This would not fit in any of my bags and I am not willing to carry this around because I am very forgetful. I might just place there somewhere and just forget it exists. It's just big, oddly shaped and really impractical.

Dyson Airwrap Styler and all its other dupes

@avafrancis GRWM & style my hair with the new #dysonanz Airwrap Multi Styler 🤍🤍 #dysonairwrap #fyp #styledwithdyson #thatdysonmoment #ad ♬ Garden - 3scope

I have given up heat styling on my hair years ago in the effort to rehabilitate it from damage from years of styling abuse. That is my main reason why I'm not falling for these Dyson stylers or any other dupes. Let me also take a moment to mention the price. It's priced at Php 20,000 - Php 30,000!!! I don't earn enough to buy this and even if I do, I don't think I could ever justify paying that price for a hairstyler. There's so many things that amount of money can do.

In terms of the product itself, it is also really to big for my liking. I don't like anything bigger than the regular sized hair dryers or flat irons.

But really though, if it's priced like that, I would expect for hair like Angelina Jolie's with ZERO work.

Sponge Washing Machine

@mireyarios Laundry day 🧺 #miniwashingmachine #stpatricksday #beautyblender #beautyblendercleaning #beautyblenders #makeupsponge #makeupsponges #kpop ♬ Spongebob Tomfoolery - Dante9k Remix - David Snell

What a day that was when this had some occupancy in my headspace in the sense that I kept trying to understand why would this actually be needed.

Why. Just why.

What makes it too difficult to take a sponge under running water and take a bit of time to lather some soap and squeeze it out after. Why is there a need for a washer for it. I don't get it.

Skims Shapewear

@sarahhhrae @skims has me in a chokehold #skims #skimsreview #skimsdress #plussizeedition ♬ Sure Thing (sped up) - Miguel

A big chunk of my life is spent hearing people shame my body and talk about how flabby my stomach is. It's just the way it is. So cut myself some slack whenever I get tired of hearing another fat shaming comment.

When I saw the Skims shapewear, I really wanted to try them myself. Maybe that will somehow minimise the body shaming comments. What stopped me was the possibility of high customs fees and the fact that these shapewear look like toddler onesies prior to wearing them. The ladies do actually looked very snatched and the shapewear looks very flattering on tons of different people.

Personally, I gave up my desire to try it when I just could not convince myself that I will be comfortable getting squeezed by that teeny tiny thing.

Heatless Hair Roller

@demikrou heatless curls tutorial! #hair #heatlesscurls #heatlesshair #heatlesshairstyles #heatlesswaves #heatlesscurlsovernight #heatlessovernightcurls ♬ if u use this sound ur automatically hot - 🎸

This is might be just a case of user error or my hair just needs damage before it can hold a curl, but I tried the yoga pants, socks, hair rollers, etc to no avail. My hair just does not hold the curl longer than 5 mins. Also, the yoga pants and socks hack is not too comfortable to sleep on. It was a good thing that I tried the free method before I saw these quite expensive overnight hair rollers.

Casetify

@gublertok unbox my new @casetify black kingsnake phone case with me! #casetify #iphonecase #iphone #iphone12pro ♬ original sound - nadia lynn

My boyfriend and I tried customising our own cheesy couple phone cases way back and we were really impressed by the quality. The downside at first was the high price point and the time it took to arrive. We just went for it with the hopes that it will be high quality. Without a doubt, they look really sturdy at first and they're really pretty cases. They felt expensive. However, after just a few months of use, they started to fall apart and in my case, I stay at home most time but it still got damaged. I now use a knockoff for this - not something to be proud of, but I won't be spending Php 3,000 for a phone case again.

LED Light Therapy Mask

@currentbody Keep watching to see the results ❤️ #led #skincare #skintok ♬ Beat Automotivo Tan Tan Tan Viral - WZ Beat

I love skincare and I always make it a priority to take care of my skin. Ther's not much to say here except that I won't be using any LED light therapy mask no matter how much people online say it works wonders. The look of it just gives me the creeps.

I will choose the Iron Man mask any day even if that does not have any benefits other than pure entertainment.

Beis Weekender Bag

@laravoglerr quick look at my new @Beis Travel mini weekender bag and carry on! can’t wait to use them #beistravel #beistravelbags #traveltiktok ♬ Love You So - The King Khan & BBQ Show

I have many, many regrets in life but using a duffel bag to travel is one of the top five. I am quite used to less than stellar travel because I am not rich enough to ever experience business or first class, but that one time I brought a duffel bag as my carry-on just made it hell for me. It was a long haul flight non-direct flight so I was carrying this around from one terminal to another and it was just a pain. My arms took days to recover from it.

This bag is cute, but I won't ever buy something like this again. If I'd ever want a gym bag (lol who am I kidding), I might just go for mainstream athletic brands like Nike or Adidas.

I hope I didn't step on any toes for this but if one of these things are your faves or you can just simply afford them, then I'm truly happy for you. But I'm just an average income working girl who is saving for bigger things that I cannot afford to throw money around or go in debt.

How about you? What are trendy items that you won't be buying?

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Friday, March 10, 2023

I think by now, it is safe to declare that Taylor Jenkins Reid is one of my absolute favourite authors. I've only read two books but I don't think she'll ever disappoint me in the future. Fingers crossed!

Anyway, this is one of the extremely hyped books of hers. I have to admit I held back diving into this book for a long time just because of the hype.

So, is it worth it?

The Story

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo tells the story of...well, the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo. However, even if the book is outlined based on her seven husbands, I think the story goes a lot more deeper than that. Beyond all the marriages is the story of a woman's quest for a great career and her one true love.

Evelyn was not very fortunate when she was younger but she knew what she wanted to be. At a young age, when she got the chance to go to Hollywood, she committed to herself to a marriage of convenience and got out of it as soon as she was on the right track. Expectedly, the road to stardom and staying on it was not a very easy one.

Evelyn Hugo's life was far from perfect but how she evolved, fell and picked herself back up is a story worth telling.

What I Think...

There were a lot of times that I had to pinch and tell myself that this is a "memoir" of a fictional character. It just seemed so real. Maybe because there were scenarios that reflect the real lives of young Hollywood actresses during the old Hollywood era. Or I believe it's really just because of how amazing TJR is as a storyteller.

I read that when TJR pitched this idea to her publisher, her publisher didn't think the story of a woman married seven times would be very convincing. Quiet frankly, before reading the book, I didn't know how that would work. However, TJR just really nailed it. She made something out of a very strange concept. Just pure talent.

Enough fangirling.

Let's get to other aspects.

There are two POVs in the story. One is a third person view of Monique Grant, a writer interviewing the present-day aged Evelyn Hugo and another is a first person view of Evelyn Hugo in the past as she tells the story of her seven husbands. Monique Grant was not a high profile writer but Evelyn chose her specifically and wouldn't do the interview otherwise. From then on, I knew the very reason why was going to be a plot twist but when it was revealed, I was already too wrapped up in Evelyn's story that I didn't really have an emotional response to it.

Another thing that is worth noting that there are some girl to girl action here. I know there are people who (even though they're not homophobic) are not very comfortable with that. I personally don't mind it and in this case, it is quite important to the overall story. If you're to skip through it you might not enjoy or appreciate this book to its full extent.

The best part of this book for me is just like Monique, I was given so many reasons to hate on Evelyn. However, my heart just didn't and just couldn't. It was not pity nor was I charmed. I also was not apathetic towards her. As a matter of fact, I did like Evelyn Hugo. I think despite everything that she was and everything that she's been through, she's still an amazing woman who deserved the good that she got in life.

This is a book worth reading and certainly a very memorable one.

The Fictional Characters That Inspired My "Pick Me" Phase

Monday, March 6, 2023

Growing up in the 90s to 2000s literature/movie scene, I have seen endless fictional characters being hailed as ideal for simply not being like any other girls. Back then, the personality pick me was not fully defined yet probably because everyone was too busy not be like all the other girls. The strive to become so unique made a lot of girls dislike the usual things girls enjoy like makeup, shopping, pink, glitter, pop music, etc.

If you're not aware, a pick me personality is basically the I'm not like any other girls profile. This personality likes to go against the grain - you will often hear them not liking what everyone enjoys. For girls, you will constantly hear them talk about being one of the boys, they'll tell you about how they are simply like not like other girls or even rebuke you for being so common.

I had that phase before and it was extremely exhausting. It is worth noting that this phase was heavily tied to my people pleasing phase as well. Ergo, that did really nothing for me except left me feeling lost. I freed myself when I fully accepted that I do like makeup, I like window shopping and I'd be damned I like everything that shimmered. I like so many things a typical girl likes. Being mainstream isn't too bad after all.

So, for today, I'd like to pay homage to all the literary characters that led me astray.

Bella Swan

via GIPHY

This list was inspired by this very girl. I don't think any pick me girls list would be complete without dear, dear Bella. My reading time for all Twilight books sums to under four days, with the last book only taking less than twelve hours. Whether that's a flex or not, I will never know. Not only did I have bad literature taste, I also had bad preferences in characters.

Bella Swan is the main character of Twilight, a vampire teen romance book (in case you're not aware). Bella has this very awkward personality and she didn't like shopping. She didn't brush her hair nor did she have any girlie interests. She just existed. If there's any trophy for the worst pick me girl in literary history, our home girl Bella could easily take one home.

I don't know what I was thinking for wanting to be like her at that time. It was like I wanted to be a wallflower as much as she was but deep inside I wanted to be that because I wanted to be seen.

Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Princess of Genovia (Pre-Transformation)

via GIPHY

Before anything else, I would like to clarify that I still have all love and adoration for Princess Mia - both the book and the movie version. But I also cannot deny how much pre-transformation Mia inspired me so much in my pick me era. Princess Mia, by the way, is the heroine of the Princess Diaries series and is the fictional princess of the amazing fictional kingdom called Genovia.

Her character gave me so much validation that even in a state of un-prettiness, someone could still see you and like you for who you are. I even agreed with her best friend (another pick me girl, btw) who hated her after her transformation. If I could have seen through that, I could have realised how her new look gave Mia a much needed confidence boost. I could have been happy for the new and improved Mia. However, I had the critical thinking skill of a skunk. No offense to skunks.

Lizzie McGuire

via GIPHY

Lizzie is actually the most tolerable of all the fictional pick me girls that I know. She's widely known for the TV series, but I also read a couple books that I decided to include her in this list.Unlike Bella, Lizzie embraces the fact that she likes most girly things like doing her hair and she has fun choosing what to wear even though her preferences are not enough to catch up to the popular girls in school.

Lizzie was not as cool as the other girls in school and she's socially awkward and during my pick me era, I thought that was very cool. Because of this "ideal", I made zero effort in making real connections and  I embraced  isolation.

Serena Van Der Woodsen

via GIPHY

If there's a pick me girl who embodies mainstream but still thinks she's uniquely cool (much like that famous nepo baby supermodel). Among all the girls on this list, Serena is the only one I didn't particularly like. She was almost unbearable but she still surprisingly was able to influence that dreadful era of mine.

Her influence was subsconscious and she specifically influened me in the need to master the "play it cool" vibes. Serena perfected the appearing not to care but actually being so affected behind the scenes. She constantly stole her best friend's thunder and she was a basic bitch but casually brushes all her bitchiness off. As much as I hate to admit it, I was more of a Selena in my pick me years even though I loved Blair with all my heart.

via GIPHY

This era is just one of the many shameful dark areas of my past that I now (thankfully) have outgrown. In its core, wanting to be this kind of girl was deeply rooted in a need for acceptance and very low self esteem. It was something I am not proud of having been, but I also know acknowledging that is very important in not going back to that circle of hell.

I really should have let these ladies remain in the books and not try to embody them into the world but again, I had major identity crisis. Lol.

Anyway, who's the fictional character that you think of when you think of a pick me girl?

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart || DNF

Friday, March 3, 2023

Let me introduce you to the book that started the very list I never thought I'd make - a DNF or Did Not Finish reading list.

In the past, I have started books but ended up not finishing it yet because I just wasn't in the right head space for it. I knew I would always go back and try to read them one day, but this is different. I just knew I wouldn't make myself go through this pain again.

I am very tolerant with books across different POVs, plots and writing styles. Even if it seems hopeless, I would push myself to finishing it just because I was hoping for something better. So, for me to say that a book is unbearable to finish, that means so much actually.

I am sorry for the long intro, I just couldn't believe how much I don't like this book. I really couldn't believe it because this is so hyped and highly rated that there was a point that I gaslit myself into thinking that there might be something wrong with me. But no, it was just really bad.

The Summary

"A beautiful and distinguished family.

A private island.

A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.

A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.

A revolution. An accident. A secret.

Lies upon lies.

True love.

The truth."

-Excerpt from official book overview

What I Think...

If I read just the overview, I could have had a clue of how this book would be like and could have avoided it based on that overview alone. However, I just bought it (it was on sale though, thank God) and bit into the hype. I might stick out like a sore thumb here for having an unpopular opinion since this is so well loved so I am very sorry for these thoughts.

"WELCOME TO THE beautiful Sinclair family. No one is a criminal. No one is an addict. No one is a failure. The Sinclairs are athletic, tall, and handsome."

These were the first few sentences in the book and it really made me go...

via GIPHY

And so I read it again and I honestly went...

via GIPHY

To give credit where credit is due, this was the first time I had those exact reactions in the very first page of a book. It was like trying to make an impactful introduction to this family and orient the readers' mindset to a stark contrast that was about to happen, but it just failed.

So, I read on thinking that maybe we're just off to a bad start.

I kept looking for a reason to convince myself to give this a chance like I would with any other book but the next few chapters were just as horrible. The sentences and scenarios were very fragmented and all over the place. I have a feeling that it was trying to be poetic or cool at the very least but it did not make any sense at all. I was not even interested to find out what they were lying about - perhaps just another shallow rich people secret? I will never know. Or maybe I would if I Google it.

"We had been in the attic before. Also, we had never been in the attic before."

I also don't feel like I did not get along with the book because of my disconnect withe the younger POV because I read The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and I actually very much appreciated it.

Therefore it's not the childish point of view, but the childish writing overall. Even in her supposedly older self, the narrator still sounded like a child who cannot get her story straight. This is what it felt like throughout all the parts that I forced myself to read. It felt like listening to a four year old with very limited vocabulary trying to explain the history of the world.

"We purchased new furniture. Hired a decorator. Placed an order for Tiffany silverware."

Again, I am very sorry if you're a big fan of this book but I just couldn't find a single cell in my being that is pleased with it. I am sure even my younger elementary student self still wouldn't like this book at all. If you like this, please let me know why in the comments below.

I don't have a physical copy of this book to throw away, but the digital one will be removed from my device and this will be left to rot in my DNF.
