On all the trips I made to Australia in the past, I was there as a business visitor visa or the Subclass 600 visa. In case you didn't know, this visa allows you to visit the country under business purposes for up to three months. Australia has very strict visa regulations but this should not be so difficult to get approved especially if your documentation and purposes are all legitimate.

According to the Australian Department of Home Affairs website, this visa allows you to make general business or employment enquiries, negotiate offers or take part in conferences or trade shows. You can read more information such as processing times, visa limitations, etc here.

Here's how I applied for my business visitor visas in the past:

1. Create or log in to your ImmiAccount

Link to the website: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au

Click on the ImmiAccount tab (as seen on photo above). After that, you will be led to this page to begin your sign in or sign up process:

Signing up is pretty straightforward and all visas for Australia are applied for in this link. Just make sure you read each page carefully and follow the sign up instructions.

2. Create a new application

Once you finished creating your ImmiAccount or logging in, click on the New Application option in your dashboard.

And choose Visitor Visa 600

3. Accomplish the application form

Just like the sign up process, accomplishing the form will be very straightforward and they have question mark icons on the side of the question or the answer tab in case you need more help understanding it. Make sure you have all the necessary details at hand like your stay dates, business purpose details, information on the business sponsoring or involved in your visit to Australia.

4. Submit your documents

After you have finished the application form, the system will generate all of your required documents. In my case, I submitted the following:

  • Travel document - I submitted a copy of my passport's bio page. It is very important that your passport expiry date should not be less than six months at the time of your scheduled arrival in Australia.
  • Proof of financial status or funding - If a business is sponsoring your trip, you can attach their business registration and financial/bank statement. If you are paying for your trip, you have to submit your own proof of funds.
  • Proof of employment or self employment - This can be a letter from the business in Australia stating that you are providing work for them in your home country, a certificate of employment or tax documents (if you are self-employed).
  • Business reason - The purposes of my visits to Australia were for training and to attend business conferences. In this case, I submitted a letter from the Australian business I am providing services for, a program of the conference and a copy of the contract with the event organisers. When I went there the first time for training, I submitted a letter signed by the Australian business' Managing Director explaining in detail what the training entails. Basically, anything legitimate that proves your business purpose in the country will be sufficient.
  • Travel history - This is required if you have prior travels in other countries. This is a scanned copy of all of your passport pages that have visas or stamps from those visits. This is also a very strong character proof that you are not one to overstay or violate visas.
  • Passport photo - Australia has specific measurement requirements for their passport photo. You have to have one taken professionally. Just tell the photo studio that you are applying for an Australian visa and they'll adjust that accordingly. For Cebu City, I highly suggest Colours in Ayala Center Cebu - they are the most accurate and efficient in my opinion.

5. Pay your visa fees

As of the writing of this post, the base cost for the business visitor visa is $145 AUD and you have to pay online using Visa/Mastercard/Amex credit or debit card.

6. Biometrics

If you are a Filipino citizen applying for the Subclass 600 visa, you are required to  submit your biometrics and this can be done in their Australian Biometrics Collection Centre offices. Your photo will be taken and your fingerprints will be collected. Once you receive a biometrics request from the Department of Home Affairs, you have to book a separate appointment at your local collection office. In Cebu City and Manila, their partner is VFS Global. To book an appointment or to know more about this step at VFS, you may visit their website here.

7. Wait for your visa grant

In my case, I received the grants for my Subclass 600 application in two weeks. I am not sure about their processing times post-pandemic, but make sure to check their website. I personally would suggest applying at least two months prior to your visit.

8. Print out your visa.

Unlike other countries, Australia does not request for your passport or "stamp" your visa. Instead, they will email you your grant notice if you were approved or you can also find it in the messages section of your application in your ImmiAccount. Print out this visa and keep it secure until your travel. For the love of god and for the sake of security, please do not take screenshots or photos and upload them online.

I hope this helps!

The Keeper of Happy Endings by Barbara Davis

I did not intend to read another WWII historical fiction but here we are again. I did have a slight idea when I downloaded it from Amazon but by the time I got to reading it, I completely forgot about it. I wanted to switch to another book for the mean time, but I just went on with this one.

The Keeper of Happy Endings is a subtle surprise in so many ways. Soline's family lineage is unique in a way that they are dressmakers, but their dresses guarantee happy endings to the brides. It has something to do with compatibility, commitment and a little bit of witchcraft. They don't just make dresses for anybody - the bride has to pass their screenings. When the Nazi came, she found herself volunteering at a hospital and falling in love with an American volunteer. As anyone can predict with love stories during wartime, it was not easy. She had to be sent away for her safety and to move to America and starting a new life. Fast forward to the current time and another person's point of view, she forms an unlikely friendship with a young lady named Rory who expressed interest in renting her real estate property. This friendship was something she didn't want but definitely is the most significant in her life.

Soline

There are two timelines to Soline's story in the book: during wartime and in her present life as an older woman. In the book, the Nazis came to Paris when Soline was still a young lady training to follow in her mother's footsteps as a dressmaker. Before she could have her chance at the art, Paris was occupied and her mother passed leaving Soline to fend for herself. She started to volunteer at a hospital serving non-Nazi soldiers and civilians thinking that she would do just good because she took care of her mother. However, a hospital is much more different and Soline almost couldn't bear her first day. She met an American volunteer named Anson and they fell in love.

Eventually, Soline became a part of the resistance with Anson. This took a toll on her safety as the gestapo started to threaten Anson and they just knew they will use her to milk him for information one day. Before that day could come, Anson arranged for Soline to be sent to America and start a new life.

Their love was short, but it was surely very romantic. I find it very romantic that I actually cursed quite a few times in the chapter when Soline was about to leave Paris. It's not too intense though, just a subtle heartbreak for the reader.

Character-wise, I did find Soline a little too stereotypical. It might be because the author wanted to set her apart from the other characters but this also gives a blow to the depth of her character.

Rory

Rory is short for Aurora. She's a young artist living off her hefty trust fund. She finds a rowhouse that she strongly felt would be the perfect place for her gallery. Like Soline, Rory had to be apart from her significant other (Hux) but hers is due to Hux's volunteer work. One day the letters from Hux just stopped and it was reported that he was kidnapped. Rory was still waiting on news for his whereabouts when she met Soline.

Her character is a tad bit annoying, to be honest. There are chapters in the book that is in her point of view and except for the real painful parts about Hux, it was just mostly whining on privileged problems like having problems with her mother because she does not want to push through with an internship in Paris, having to eat takeout meals on a daily basis, not being able to wash her dishes, problems of starting a business that has very little guaranteed returns, etc. I just don't find this cute in books and in reality. I really thought that Rory was just engulfed by her privilege bubble. However, if this was the characterisation the author was aiming, then I guess it's okay. But it's still annoying.

And an unlikely friendship

Because of her trauma from the war, starting off anew in a foreign country and surviving a fire that burnt her dreams to the ground, Soline withdrew herself from society. Rory didn't have an easy time reaching out to her. When Soline finally opened up one day, they found that they share similar pain in life and in love. This blossomed into a very natural bond and they started to relied on each other for emotional support.

This bond wasn't taken positively by Rory's mother who wanted all of her child's attention but when she does get it, she just tramples on it like a piece of paper. It was very unreasonable.

After a major conflict, Rory had to do something to make it up to Soline so she planned a grand gesture as an apology to mend or just to say goodbye. This lead to the unraveling of so many truths about Soline that none of them prepared for.

In conclusion...

This is a beautiful story. This is an easy read so if you're looking into trying historical fiction, this would be a great book to start. There's not much intensity nor is it as deep as a lot of historical fictions are (which other readers might think of as boring). It does have timeline transitions and two varying points of view but they're not confusing at all. There's an undeveloped part of the book which is the "magic" of the dresses but I think if this had been emphasised any more than it was, the book would have a totally different aura.

The characters are okay, there's not much development and they are more annoying at times but it's bearable.

The majority of the book is rather wholesome except for a teeny tiny bit where there is an "act" so I think this would still be suitable for a younger audience.

This book is good but not very remarkable. I still have another Barbara Davis book in to-read list so I'm still interested in giving the author another shot.

General VA Tasks Basics: Booking Flights, Car and Accommodation for Your Client

Monday, October 24, 2022

Ah, flight bookings and accommodation may be something that you're quite familiar with already. Before I became a VA, I already had a good understanding of how this works and where to get the cheaper deals. Even I was surprised that I still made a couple of booking mishaps that were quite expensive. I was just blessed that my boss' let those slide, but not all bosses might be the same.

If you're a new VA, you might be tasks to make some booking one of these days as well. Even with booking experience, it is still very important to do this with a great presence of mind because a single mistake may cost you a lot.

What you should ask for when you're tasked to make a flight, car and/or hotel booking

Whether you are using a travel agency or you're booking direct, these are the important questions that you should have answers to just to avoid going back and forth with your client:

Flights and Hotels
  • What are the dates of the booking? And are the date for the flight and hotel booking the same? Some might stay with friends or family for a few days and won't need a hotel in the duration of the trip.
  • Would you like an economy, business or first class ticket?
  • What time would you like to depart from your local airport or arrive at the destination airport?
  • Do you have a preferred airline company?*
  • Window seat or aisle seat?*
  • What is your passport number and birthday?* Treat this and all other information with confidentiality.
  • Do you have a preferred hotel?
  • Do you have dietary restriction?*
  • Do you have an airline or hotel loyalty membership?*

Car/Car Service

  • Do you have a preferred car type?* Sedan, SUV, Van. If they choose to use Uber, then there's no need to make any booking.
  • Would you like to hire a driver? Note that most bosses can and are very much willing to drive but it won't hurt to ask if this is your first time. Car companies at airport are usually only self-driven so if your boss does ask for a driver, you might have to contact the hotel directly for car services.

Payment
  • How would you like to pay? There are bosses who trust their VAs with credit cards but other company payment policies can also be via LastPass or they will book it themselves after you present them with the options.

For the questions marked with (*), take notes of the answers for these so you won't have to keep asking them each time you make a booking. You can ask more questions as you see fit but don't ask too many because you might annoy your client.

Presenting the options

Before you book, present the options to your client (unless they specifically tell you not to do this anymore) just to avoid getting blamed if you book the more expensive options.

In a table, you can include the following details categorised into three different price points (low, mid and high):
  • Flights. requested date and times, alternative timing that does not clash with their business meetings or visits, alternative airline
  • Hotels. Include the hotels that are closest to their meetings (usually the city centre is the best option), closest to the airport and those that are not very close, but very reputable hotels.
  • Cars. There are two trusted and best companies for car rentals that are closest to the airport: Avis and Hertz.

Why you should choose to book direct

If the company is not affiliated with any travel agency, I would suggest you only choose to book direct with the airline, car company or hotel. I ran into problems booking via third party for business trips in the past and it definitely is not worth the anxiety and hassle. Booking direct will make it easier for you or your client to make changes as well as make necessary adjustments or fix problems.

Avoid third-party websites even if they are cheaper. These are business trips, not budget getaways. I would also suggest to avoid home rentals or Airbnbs because of the problems that have recently came to light with those.

Adding the booking to calendars

It is good initiative to add the timing of the bookings to your boss' calendars as soon as they are confirmed. There are ICS files that are downloadable in the manage booking pages but you can also create your own. Be aware of time differences if there are any.

I hope this helps!

Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score

The story begins with Naomi walking in a cafe where she was mistaken for her troublesome identical twin sister Tina. She meets Knox in this unpleasant way. While she was initially attracted to him, she quickly had a change of heart when he tried to throw her out of the shop.

Naomi has always been in control of her life who has always lived to please others because she solely wants them to be happy. She got entangled into this little town where she is thrown out way out of her comfort zone and discovers all the things she has bottled up throughout her life.

"I’d lost myself while trying to convince someone else that I was what he wanted. I’d forgotten who I was because I’d let someone else take over the definition."

When things went on a downward spiral

The moment Naomi left the cafe things went on a downward spiral for her. See, she was a runaway bride. As to the reason why, I would hold that one back because it's one of the character "revelations" in the book. So her car went missing and when she went to her motel, her money, cards and some of her stuff got stolen and she was left with a teenager on her care. All thanks to her beloved sister.

Because of all these, Naomi decided to stay in town and figure things out first. She stayed in a cabin that Knox's grandma owned and got a job at Knox's bar. Well, if you have read or are still reading tons of romance novels, you will already know where this is going.

Bump in the road

There was a time when Knox and his brother Nash had a physical fight over Naomi. What shocked me was that there was not a single talk or the slightest moment leading up to that.  At that time, Knox also suddenly had a jealous nerve when he saw Naomi holding a bouquet of flowers. He was wondering in his mind where she got them. This all happened right after their fight at the coffee shop. I actually thought I missed a chapter or two but I didn’t. It just happened.

Some bonds between characters in the story like how Knox just suddenly got super attracter to Naomi or her closeness to some people in the town were just too sudden. There was only a handful of characters that were introduced as her new friends and the happenings of their lives got around town through word of mouth (as it always does in small towns in books and reality), I couldn't rationalise why the entire town hated Knox when he did something terrible to Naomi. I mean, if I was one of the townspeople, I would have some form of judgment when something horrible is done towards another person who is innocent but I wouldn't go as far as hating him.

These are some of the things that made me go "what happened" while reading the book. These were little bumps in the road that I couldn't emotionally connect to the rest of the plot, but it was generally tolerable.

How the characters were

There are no dramatic character developments in the book except for the bad boy who had daddy and commitment issues falling for the good girl and the good girl turning into an ice princess for a moment when she got her heart broken. All the other characters have remained the same - Tina was horrible from the beginning with a split second change towards the end, those who were kind from the beginning remained their adorable selves until the end.

In conclusion...

This book reminds me of the Tagalog pocketbooks I used to read during high school and college except that this might be a lot better quality. There's not much intensity and some scenarios are more predictable than I would like, but the story is very interesting enough to keep going.

I don't recommend this to the younger ones who haven't had "the talk" with any of their parents or guardians yet.

I think any adult who appreciates a good romantic novel would like this one. I liked this book more than I initially thought I would. It is cozy, romantic and just enough spice.

Credit Cards for First-Timers: Mistakes That Will Drown You In Debt

Wednesday, October 12, 2022

In this two-part mini series, I go through some of the basics of owning and using credit cards because financial literacy is very much needed in order to make your card work for you and not the other way around.

Having good credit standing will also benefit you in the long run when you apply for bigger and more necessary loans like house, car or business loans.

A credit card can be a source of power or a source of one's financial downfall and it all depends on how you use it. It is easy to swipe, but paying won't be too easy if you go beyond what you are capable of.

Here are some mistakes that will most likely drown a cardholder in debt:

Forgetting that it is not an extension of income.

One of the most common and wrong belief is that a credit card is an extension of an income. It is not. It is a liability that you need to pay for with actual money you earn or have in your account. It should not be a reason to elevate one's standards of living or spend more than what one has each month.

It should not be used to constantly cover for what your income cannot pay. Credit cards have interest rates, minimum payment requirement, etc. If you use it to cover the negative amount in your monthly income, you will end up using your money for the following month and this will continue on unless your income changes. Once you find yourself in this dark loop, it will be very difficult to get out of it.

Swiping more than what you can pay for.

Think of the things you do not normally buy without you card - the things that you cannot pay for in cash. These same things should never be swiped using your credit card even with zero installment offers because the interest rate covers the entire amount of your debt.

You should be able to plan out well what "allowance" or wiggle room that you have in your monthly income before you decide to swipe. If you can pay for the expense next month or within the month, then by all means go for it. However, if that expense you pay with your card will jeopardise next month's income, please don't. If it's just a luxury and not a neccessity, wait until you can actually afford it.

Allowing other people to use it.

Allowing other people to use your card with the promise that they will pay you back in a week or a month, it is the same as lending them money but the difference is that you don't hand over the cash. If you are going to let people use your card, make sure they pay you in cash on the same day and the most important thing is make sure that you immediately pay your card with that.

If you allow others to use your card and they don't pay you back, this will be a surprise expense on your part because the card is your responsibility not theirs so you have to pay for it by the time it's due. Unless this is a risk you are willing to take, I would highly discourage you from lending your card.

Funding a lifestyle using a credit card.

A person's lifestyle should be funded by their own monthly income and not a credit card. It is always wise to live within or below your means. Again, do not swipe for anything more than what you can pay for. Funding a lifestyle using a credit card is funding a lifestyle in debt - it will look pretty, but you know it's all rotten inside.

Certain aspects of a lifestyle like travels, partying, shopping, etc should be covered by the disposable income. It is the income left after you have paid for all the bills and have set aside for emergency or savings fund.

These "extras" in life are also best enjoyed when you have no risks to think about when you get home and check your statements.

Not looking at your statements.

Your statements are not only your basis for the monthly payments but is also a great way to keep track on what you have overspent the month before and to be able to plan out how you will pay your remaining balance.

Never, ever ignore what your statements. Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to debt.

I hope this somehow helps give you a general idea on what you need to avoid as a credit card holder. It's always better to be wise and to protect yourself from these mistakes.

Credit Cards for First-Timers: How to Apply in the Philippines

Monday, October 10, 2022

I was relatively young when I had my very first credit card. In my case, financial wisdom did not really come with age and I was more foolish then and that led to so many mistakes that took me years to recover. When I first thought of writing about this, I really doubted if I am not being hypocritical and then I was told that I am just the right person to talk about this. My sole aim for this is hopefully to help anyone reading who is having their very first credit card to not make the same mistakes I did and be led astray. Because looking back now, if only I had known any better, I wouldn't be so deep into the black hole.

I will be going through the application process, practical tips and some things to keep in mind.

For this post, here's how you can apply for your very first credit card here in the Philippines:

Step one. Do you really need it?

Almost all banks here in the Philippines offer debit cards with Mastercard/Visa chips so technically they would serve almost the same purpose as a credit card. However, if you'd wish to have a credit card for some financial flexibility and all the rewards it could offer, it would be something you can consider. Consider and weigh in all the benefits and the risks before you proceed.

Step two. Look for the best credit card for you.

Cards from different banks in terms of rewards, annual fee, interest rates, reliability, etc. If this is your very first card, I would recommend starting with a card that has the least fees like the Citibank Simplicity card. It has no annual fees, no late fees but it has no rewards either. It would be something great to start with.

It is worth knowing that credit cards have levels that is paralleled with income or savings brackets so you should consider this as well. This explains why those with platinum cards tend to flex them often.

You can have two or three options in case you don't get approved on your first option but only apply for one at each time.

Step three. Prepare your documents.

Once you have chosen your ideal card, check the website for the complete list of documents. Usually, this would be two government-issued identification documents, proof of address (can be utilities or phone bills), certificate of employment with stated income, payslips for the last three months etc.

It is easier to get approved if you are employed and have been with a company for at least three months. If not, you can submit proof of income of a business that is under your name or perhaps just have a substantial amount in your savings account in the bank that you are applying for.

Step four. Submit your application.

You can submit your documents and application form via agents - you can easily spot some in the shopping malls or you can visit the branch. I would highly suggest applying online since it is easier and faster - banks usually have impossibly long lines for customer service. Documents via online application are usually submitted via email.

Depending on the bank, you will receive (or not) an email acknowledging receipt of your application.

Step five. Wait for approval.

The bank then has to verify your documents and your profile. Since this is your first time applying, you will most likely have zero credit score to evaluate so you will be evaluated according to your savings and/or your income.

Approval can take up to 14 business days and can be either via phone or email communication.

Your application may get denied if you have no consistent banking activity or you applied for a card that is above your income bracket. As I have mentioned, credit card can vary according to the annual or monthly income requirement. Another reason would be if the bank finds you have a pre-existing loans that they will conclude that you will not be able to sustain credit card payments.

Step six. Wait for your card.

If you are approved, your card will be mailed at your doorstep. For BPI, I believe they have an option to pick up at a branch nearest you. This could take up to one month or more of waiting . You have to present a valid ID to receive your card.

Step seven. Activate your card.

Your card will have a sticker that has instructions on how to activate. To be sure, make sure you activate your card using the mobile number that you have registered in your application. This could take up to three business days. Wait for the activation notification before you use your card.

In my case, when I recently activated a card from BPI, I did not receive a notification and it has been more than three banking days. I just used it to buy a Php 10 load from Lazada to check if it works. Lol.

Minimalist phone apps to record daily activities

Wednesday, October 5, 2022

If I would hold a Guinness World Record one day, it might be for being the most forgetful human beings on this planet.

What really got to me was that one scene from The Office where Michael stole Dwight's Golden Ticket marketing idea. Dwight pulled out his journal and read aloud exactly what date and time he came up with it.

I had an epiphany and realised I wanted to do that too. Dwight Schrute is a legend.

It is really wonderful to record what happens in a day even if they're not very significant. These days, I rarely go out of the house and I haven't travelled in a while. I'm enjoying the peace that comes with this lifestyle so at most times, there's really nothing more to record except for what I ate and what I cleaned. Even with all that being true, I still enjoy looking back at the previous days and reading about my insignificant days.  I am not very fond of constantly updating through social media because I don't think anyone cares so this is a great way to immortalise my memories without revealing much personally.

I scoured the app store and tried a few apps but here's three that stood out to me. I chose to go digital with this one because it's a lot more sustainable and convenient for me. These apps also have minimal aesthetics and user experience.

Diary with Password (Fan Yang)

This is my main diary app and my absolute favourite. I think the key to consistency with an activity is simplicity and this is probably the most functional minimalist diary I came across. This is great if you're like me who just like to keep a written daily record - nothing more, nothing less.

My favourite features other than its interface are the search bars and the ability to export the records (premium feature). It also has a password lock feature.

I don't really need too much stickers or imagery in my diary so I don't see it as a disadvantage that this app has none of that. It's just perfect the way it is.

Download link: App store

Structured - Day Planner (Visual Calendar & Reminders)

If you still want to keep it minimal but with a few colours and icons, then this app might be what you are looking for.

This works mainly as a planner of daily activities - just like a typical calendar app but just with a lot more pleasing aesthetic and user experience. I use this to record activities, not as a checklist so it works both ways. It does not have the feature to add photos, but there's a field at every task to add more notes if you also want to use this as a diary.

The only downside I see with this is that it does not have a search feature and it cannot export data and has no password. Other than that, it's a pretty straightforward and also a very functional app.

Download link: App store

My Diary - Journal with Lock (Bullet Journal Diary with lock)

Out of all the diaries I've tried that has the feature to add in images, life records such as moods, stickers, etc this is by far the most straightforward and I think still falls under the minimalist category.

This is a more all-in-one type of diary but will not do much for organising your to-do lists. I mean you can still use it for that function, but will take you extra steps to get that done. However, if you're just aiming to have a diary as record for your activities and you also want to record your mood and achievements, this will work really well for you.

If you don't have any idea on what you'll write for the day, the app has a feature that gives you a question to answer just to let the thought juices out.

The app also allows you to export your data into a pdf version and you can set a password for the app.

Download link: App store, Play Store

If you've tried these apps too, share your experience too!

Do I Miss Taking Photographs?

Glifesnaps photography ontario canada

It's been more than a year since I started seriously learning how to take photos with a DSLR camera. When I started learning, I took photos of the sunset since I was inspired by so many talented photographers in the island.

I took photos of sunset, everyday life, my dogs, etc. When I went to Canada to visit my family, I also basked in the glory of the autumn and wintertime. Different weather, same hobby.

Now that I am back in the city and I have chosen the domesticated life of not going out too much to give way to my financial priorities, I have not been taking as much photos as I did months ago.

Do I miss taking photographs?

Glifesnaps photography ontario canada

Not that anyone ever asked, but yes. I do miss it but I know the passion is still very much alive. It's taking a backseat because I know I'll get back to it one day.

Glifesnaps photography ontario canada

It's not that I have stopped, really. I still do take photographs of pretty much the same ones I used to love. However, I admittedly have slowed down.

That's the thing with passion - you never allow yourself to stop because all love, when ignored, it ceases to exist.

Glifesnaps photography ontario canada

Much more equal to taking photographs is missing the loved ones and the places we explored. It's missing begging my significant other how much I wanted to explore and take photographs of.

I miss packing my gear and reheating my silica gel for a day of exploration.

But also these feelings of longingness gives rise to a different kind of hope - the hope that one day, I'll be able to do these things again.

Glifesnaps photography ontario canada

Passion is one tricky thing to talk about because others may not respond to their own the same way I do but I think that's the beauty of it.

I do miss taking photographs but it's a feeling that I know will never ever stop me from learning it and putting more memories to a still.
