While it's true that reading is not a hobby for everyone that should not stop anyone from at least trying to read at least a few books in their lifetime.
If your new year's resolution or life resolution is to start the habit of reading but you are too intimidated with the "big books" or you do not know where to start, this list might help you out somehow.
Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe
The first book in the series, this follows the journey of four siblings namely Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy in their first adventure to Narnia. During this time, Narnia is a frozen land in eternal winter under the control of the White Witch. With the return of Aslan, the Great Lion, the siblings found themselves in an adventure to save the land.
This is a children's book but this (for me) could be one of the most valuable books you will ever read in your life. This is one of the books that I would definitely introduce to my future children. Also, given that this is written for children, this book is so easy to read that almost anyone could enjoy it. There's too much good in this book and it is written so exquisitely that I know will really spark anyone's imaginations.
Please do not take it as an insult if you are a started reader and you get recommended a children's book - it is really a very realistic way to start up the hobby and build it up from there.
A Walk to Remember
A Walk to Remember is a story of Landon and Jamie who are two very different people who lived very different lives, but chance brought them together and one of the most beautiful fictional stories were lived. This shows how moving and powerful true love is - that even in the most trying of times and all hope is lost, it finds its way to grow.
I know almost everyone by now has seen the movie (which is also equally beautiful, btw) but if you haven't read the book, I highly suggest this one. Sparks has a writing style that is very easy to read and still gives you a great experience. You'll get hooked in the story that you might find it difficult to put down which I think is a great factor if you're still starting to read as a hobby.
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Breakfast at Tiffany's is a story of Holly Golightly, an escort to rich men in New York and is also seeking a rich old man to marry. Her path crossed with a man who just moved in to her building, a man that is the exact opposite of what Holly is looking for. They started getting attracted to each other but they constantly went one step forward two steps back because they're fighting the chance to be together.
I know the classic books have quite an intimidating reputation, but this is one of the few that is a breeze to get through and it's actually not very lengthy. The characterisation is really great with this one. Holly is oddly charming for being the kind of person that she is and you will find yourself liking her as the story progresses and actually rooting for her to find the happiness she deserves.
This book is a great expression that sometimes we have these grand plans for ourselves but the universe has something more in store for us.
